I think so because it's everyone so ofton just gets a lead role out of nowhere without any experience..you have to work your way to the top...with little roles as extra's..you get experience..and depening on your role...you might get noticed...just act the role, don't over do it, and have great stage presence...also, it helps to be friendly and mingle with castmates, so you can get connections from them(but don't use them just for that)

It's highly unlikely that you will be working as an extra (standing around in the background) and have Steven Spielberg walk by and say "Wow! I must have you as the lead in my next picture!".
BUT . . .
It won't hurt you, either. One of the great things about being an extra is that you get to see how movies are made and the process of filming shot after shot after shot for 2 minutes of screen time.
If you want to be an actor, the best thing is to take some acting lessons, get involved in community or school theater and then start putting your resume and head shot in to casting calls and try to get auditions. When you're working on these "less glamorous" projects, introduce yourself to the leads, talk to the cinematographers, chat up the director if you can without getting in the way. The more people you know, the better your chances.
Being an extra will help you flesh out your resume and will look a little better than having no experience whatsoever.
Nobody ever starts at the top. Even the greats were often used as extras or small roles in some pretty lame movies or TV shows before they got better roles and turned mega-famous.

In the industry, extras are considered merely moving scenery.
No! No! No! It WILL NOT look good on your resume. It will not be thought of in any way as acting experience by anyone who knows anything about acting. Please, do not fool yourself into thinking that it will be anything but a chance to see how movies are made and how boring a process it actually is. (Though, since it is your first time, it may be fun for awhile. Just bring a book.)
The lucky folks who are discovered are not discovered being extras. They are discovered doing commercials, acting in small theatre companies, or-- better yet -- improv companies. They work their way up through many, many small roles.
Check your favorite actor or actress on imdb.com. See how many little parts they had before they were in a movie you recognize them in. (And, they were probably in non-speaking roles before that.)
Have thick skin and determination. But listen carefully to those whose job it is to find talent and know talent.
Good luck!

You could be "discovered," but chances are low since you won't be able to show very much in an extra role unless you are tremendously good-looking. However, if you did this regularly, then you would be able to learn how the industry works and you could end up using that experience to your advantage.

Get your face out there. It can't hurt, right. I was an extra in a commercial for golf balls. My friend and I were in the stadium watching a golf tournament and they picked her out to walk up into the stands during a shot. They must have picked her for a reason. She has since gotten lead speaking rolls in commercials. If it's something that you want to do then do it.

Not really, an extra is a person that has no speaking parts, but are used in the background for the setting,(you don't want just 2 people in a town talking with no one around). usually they are walking or silently talking with someone else in the background

No. Being the lead is the only way to succeed. You start and you end there. Never have stars worked their way 'up'. Mostly lying down is the preferred process.
You better be hungry as a shark, don't be doped by 'ugly betty' philosophy.
