Trial & error. Since you are having difficulty, concentrate on looking for foundation at department stores or boutiques which have testers. Ask the sales person to select 3 matches and apply them in strips along your jaw line. The one that disappears/blends in the best is the one. Clean off the test stripes & apply the best one. Wear it for a little while and bring a small mirror so you can check how it looks in different lighting.
Application: sponge or foundation brush are the best ways to apply.

I would advise you to visit your nearest clinique or Origins counter. They have numerous shades and are great matching your skin tone. You should never try to match foundation to your hand but you should match it directly to your face. You need to find out what shade family you are in. Then remember to go for a foundation that is also for your skin type meaning combination, oily, or dry as well as covergae level. Always purchase a pressed powder that is a shade lighter than the foundation to give it that glow and make it not look like a mask or pasty.

It may be beneficial to go to one of the makeup counters or stores in the malls which offer free consults and often a free try in the form of having your makeup done. These consultants usually have good advice and you get to try before you buy. Keep in mind, they are trying to sell as much as possible, so don't take all of their suggestions. Mary Kay also offers at home make over type parties as well if you want some friends to join in. Bonus is you may earn free make-up if your friends buy some too.

I use Mary Kay Creme to powder foundation...I find that it works best for me...granted, it is pricey, but I get it at half off being a consultant...It was one of the things that attracted me to Mary Kay's makeup and skin care. Everyone says it's so pricey, but people don't realize, these consultants own the business and run it how it works for them and their customers...With me...if a customer says they need it cheap, I give them a discount..I would rather lose money than make money if it meant that I got one more person interested in Mary Kay...

Go to a good makeup counter where you can try different foundations and have a someone who's skilled putting it on you. MAC make-up artists are great and their products are very good.
If you don't want to approach a counter, find a Sephora or Ulta near you. You can go in and try on different brands and shades yourself or there are people there to help you as well, to find what works best for you.

Try Bare Minerals foundation. It's a powder and covers more naturally than any make-up I've ever seen. It really is great. Look on QVC.com for it.
However, it is kinda expensive. If you like, you can try L'Oreal's line of Mineral foundation. I haven't used them, but my sister did and says they work pretty good too.

I heard to apply it to your neck because that is where the eye will compare the shade anyway. I always let it dry before buying because my skin is really fair, and I usually see a variation after I apply.

go to a cosmetics counter where you can actually test the products. Have someone test some colors on you or swipe some on your jaw. Which ever one resembles your color the most is the one.

Try "Almay Smart Shade". It comes in three shades. I use the light/medium. It blends in perfectly and you can't tell you are even wearing it.
