"Pan's Labyrinth" is the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother's new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944, after Franco's victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

Del Toro's new film (and arguably best) called Pan's Labryinth, it is indeed in spanish with english subtitles.
I'm not sure what to tell you concerning it being 'arty', but it's certainly mindblowing. It is a film that you would have to experience and then make up your own mind as to what happened. Definitly a recommendable movie but be prepared for intense and disturbingly scary scenes.

Yeah, it's Pan's Labyrinth. It's marvelous. It's in Spanish with English subtitles. The director and actors are Spanish, except for Pan himself who is American, though he speaks Spanish in the film. You have to see it, it's great.
