Either salt or wood ash. Personally I like wood ash because it leaves a bit of stuff behind that continues to help stop ice from forming instead of just dissolving, and it doesn't kill the grass nearby. Ice melt? Why bother? It's just salt with other nasty chemicals.
Children with time on their hands are also a great help, I've heard.

Salt and chemicals will all work, but they also damage your grass, and cause rust on the underside of your car. The chemicals may also be harmful to small animals. Is it all worth it, just to make your driveway "summertime dry" and clean for a week or two? There's several ways to beat the ice, making it less slippery. Cat litter is good for this, as is sand. You can buy sacks of sand anyplace you'd buy concrete mix. -Far easier too, than picking and chopping at the ice to scrape it off!

there are many commerical items out there, but they are not cost prohibitive. Salt on the other hand works great in small areas, like the walk to your home.
get that at you local CO-OP or farm feed & seed.

Yes it does work. But be careful because it may cause discoloring of the concrete.
