Because they were one of the first miserable whiney bands with too much synth and pretentious lyrics. They influenced a lot of other miserable bands that whined and wrote pretentious self obsessed lyrics. Marketing being miserable was played out by the time Ian Curtis died. How does anyone take garbage like the smiths seriously? I will give them credit for having good instrumentals behind the whining....but it's impossible to get past the world class annoyance of Morrisey.

The magic of Morrissey's wit/lyrics/poetic shyness and Marr's songwriting ability/jangly guitar melodies speaks directly to the angst that most youth feel and seek out in music.

Morrissey had issues, even back in the 80's. Marr showed up at his house once in Manchester and the rest is history. Later on, when collaborating, they couldn't even work in the same place. Morrissey would add lyrics to existing tracks that Marr came up with.

Come on people what makes a band classic in addition to straight up ability is some drama!

I wouldn't say "classic", although they were one of the more influencial pre-alternative bands from the 80's that influenced alot of the upcoming generations of music.
