Number of reasons.
1. Throw a rod i.e. blow up the engine
2. An incredibly weak and dying battery which could be due to an alternator that is not charging
3. Computer brain gone bad (very intermittent)
4. Bad fuel pump or clogged fuel line or filter

Loose or broken motor mounts can destroy electrical, fuel and mechanical connections. If the engine flops around in it's bay when shifted from forward to reverse and back again in a disturbing manner then have this problem addressed first. Poor battery grounding to frame and engine can have the same effect. Additional ground wires insure proper operation if done wisely.

My first car used to do it all the time. It would just stop dead instantly. It ended up being the water pump. I hope that's not what's wrong with your car, because it cost me $600 dollars to fix, and this was fifteen years ago. (My car was a 1988 Plymouth Sundance)
