I made a minor mistake of formating the hole 320GB of space on my hard drive during a XP installation. Now I would like to make a new partition and install linux for a dual boot. Whats a good way to go about this with out deleting any data? The only safe way I can think of would be to back up everything and start over.

You need 3rd party partitioning software. I use Acronis Disk Director and can recommend it to you. It is easy in use so you won't have any troubles to make partitions without loosing your data. You can use partitionMagic. It lets you compact you harddrive, and move all you data to the front of the disk, you can then partition it into 2 drives. I believe Linux has a similar product, search for linux rescue disk.

You need to use 3d party software, like disk director, partition magic, etc. i think disk director has some advantages. Its price is less than PM price and has additional utilities like os selector(good boot manager), recovery expert(can recover lost or deleted partitions).
