I am not trying to give anyone idea's or impose any either. I am asking because of a response I got to one of my questions. The person who reponded seemed to think martial law was close at hand. I have never heard anything like that before or since. Albeit there is scary news coming from the US I have never heard suggested martial law.

As a point of interest we (Canada) imposed martial law as a response to our own home grown terrorists (FLQ ) Ahh good ole Trudeau - could do anything and the nation loved him for it . Never figured out why - but he could

civil war-never
martial law--probably never as our government keeps the millitary at war some place or another for who knows what reasons.
I wouldn'r rule out this being a police state in 20 yrs though.

Dear Trout-I don't think we are close at all. We have been through tougher times and we have had erosion of our civil liberties in the past. Think of the Alien and Sedition Act and the camps for Japanese and German Americans in WWII. I'm very concerned about the erosion of our civil rights and I do think they are being eroded "on a daily basis." I think this is a good question, but you must remember history to really give a thoughtful answer. Bottom line for me--we've been in this situation before and we survived. I do not think the American people would stand for troops in our streets. It was the American people who forced President Johnson to end the war in Vietnam.

Civil war? In the usa? As in states pitted against each other? Buddy, ever since 9/11 we have united. The only person we are after to get out of our hairs is Bush.

It is closer to martial law. Americans are still too comfortable to go to war with eachother. Who ever fires the first shot in trying to start a civil war will be swarmed with the cops and military so fast that anyone with a second round will be killed before they get the second shot out.

That would require civil unrest in the US, there isn't any. Gang warfare is a more signifigant threat in many cities.
The closest the US has come to civil war recently was 1968. Beleive it or not, democracy works.

Leftists have been trying to force America into that situation since the 1960s. Americans have kept them at bay so far.

In other countries, the Leftists succeeded in creating civil war and overthrowing the governments. Cuba, China, nearly France (May 1968) and so on.

Civil war, I rather doubt. If you are referring to the gulf between the neo-cons and the normal liberals (who thanks to the lap puppy media have made normal liberals seem extreme) Because for that to occur, my opinion is that there would need to be a consistant geographical space for those of whatever side to be gathered together at. Whereas, there are scatterings of each viewpoint and many in between in every geographical location. Don't just buy the color coded maps, because they only tell you the majority.

To the idea of martial law --- all I can say is, please, please don't give King George II any more ideas!

If the neo-cons have their way, it will come to that. But they won't--they are already losing power. I'm more concerned about some of the most unstable of them resorting to terrorism when it really dawns on them they aren't going to get the religious dictatorship they've been advocating.
