I am thinking of getting a desktop computer, and though I am more familiar with using a PC, my friend tells me that if she could do it all over again, she would buy a Mac. I'm needing it for basic internet and word and excel type documents.

I switched from PC to Mac a few years ago and love it. The link below is for Apple's web site it's good, but it won't tell you about any of the down sides. The Mac is not a good computer if you want to play games and they are a little more expensive than a PC. But you make up for the price difference by the fact that none of the pain ful and expensive problems that ruin life on a PC happen on a Mac. No spyware or virus problems for example. And you rarely if ever have to "erase your hard drive and reinstall the operating system" something my friends with PCs do frequently.
If you're a student or an educator you can get a discount on your Mac, and you can get Microsoft Office cheap too.
Good luck!

Given what you said you do there is little work involved. MS Office runs on a Mac so you would largely be using the same tools. For what ever reason MS Office's look and feel is not exactly the same but I never had a problem.

Check out the Apple site. There is a page for those thinking of getting a Mac who are coming from a PC

Mac is nothing more than a expensive PC without a bios chip and using a Linux based OS (freebsd). If you're already use to PC, stay with it. It's cheaper and much easier to get programs for.

Macs are less likely to crash or get viruses. Anything you can do on a PC, you can do on a Mac, but you can do so much more on a Mac, also.
