The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old now. In about 4 or 5 more billion years, it will expand to become a red giant. Then it will throw off its outer layers, forming a planetary nebula. (This will melt all the planets except maybe Pluto). When this stage is done, it will cool down to become a white dwarf. After 2 or 3 billion years, it will have cooled down to be a brown dwarf. It will be like that for many many billions of years. Then it will be just a (large) lump of rock until some other star or black hole eats it up.

In several billion years, the sun will have depleted its supply of hydrogen and begin burning helium at which point it becomes a red giant, big enough nearly to consume Earth and making life here pretty much impossible. It will NOT explode.

Afterward, it will become a white dwarf...relatively cool.

Eventually, after myriad years, all of its protons will have decayed and it will die like all the rest of the matter in the universe.

The sun will blow up five billion years after 0 AD. It will grow really big, turn red, and blow up.
