I have an interesting scenario. A friend of mine wants to hook up her wireless laptop to DSL through a wireless router. She will be moving and getting DSL hooked up at that point. She also wants to set up the wireless network then. I was wondering what is the easiest way to do this. Should we set up DSL first (or at least dial up internet service) before trying to set up the wireless router, or can the wireless router be set up first without necessarily having internet service. I think she'll be getting a Netgear wireless router. And just to verify, it is not necessary for the router to be hardwired to a computer to set up the wireless network for internet access right? I think I read this as answer to a previous post. Thanks

You've basically got it. It's probably easiest to have the DSL hooked up first, and then you just add a router between the modem and the machine (whether the machine is hard-wired or wireless). You will have to configure the router to manage the internet connection though, and your ISP should be able to guide you through that process.

Okay Carmen,

1. Get the DSL hooked up first and verify you get internet access.
2. You can't hook up a network to a phone connection
3. Install the router according to the instructions that come with it.
4. Yes, I think you have to wire-connect 1 pc to talk to the router once it's installed.

Good Luck

It's easier to set up DSL with a direct wired connection to the computer first, then add in the router. You will need to be hard-wired to setup both, but once they're set up you can use wireless. Make sure you have WPA or WPA2 encryption enabled!

YOu dont need an Internet connection to set up your Box, Like Pass protection, and things like that..

But for ISP Configuration, such as a DNS, OR another type of server, You wil need A Connection, (unless your on a home net, without interntet connection..)
3 of my Offices, Dont use an internt connection, To Have our network..

We just Have shared abilities.(Examp..sharing the entire drive.)
