I would start by asking on what occasions? coming or going? It could be invitations or calling cards. In Victorian times it was fashionable to issue paper invitations to functions at one's house.

I should ask Nicemanvery that question, he reached the grand young age of 107 last week! He tells some great stories, did you know he once got stuck inside one of Queen Victorias chimneys? Fascinating stuff.
