we have a split rock fireplace original to the house that does not reach the ceiling (new walls added height) and want to wrap crown moulding around it but think we'd like smaller crown around the perimter of the remainder of the room - welcome any and all opinions/help

Its completely up to you however I would suggest having the crown slightly smaller in height than the base. You talked about a fire place that doesn't finish to the ceiling. in that spot you could use larger moulding to coverup the space. One way would be to use a piece of 1by stock that is wide enouph to fill the gap and attach the moulding you want to use on the rest of the room on top of that it will help cover the gap as well as make everything easier and more eye appealing. Instead of the 1by stock you could also use base moulding upside down and again attach the crown to that to give it more flair.

YOu have 2 different kinds of crown molding. You have the flat and then the angle. If you are going flat, then the suggested would be about 3/4 the size of your baseboards. If you are going with angle, then it is recommended that you get the same size. I like the angle personally as it adds elegance and character to the room.

Three inches wide. It should be heavier on the bottom walls. Asymmetrical looks better and creates interest..
Three inch crown molding is a good standard size.

I wouldn't go larger then a 3" with 8'ceilings...it's a personal rule.

I would make it at least as wide as the base, for balance.
