1st the fabric makes a difference on the setting. The colour makes a difference in the type and amount of starch.
Get a piece of wax paper and clean off the plate of the iron -no steam.
Cotton shirts iron best if they're damp to start with.
Don't be in a hurry. Iron the sleeves 1st- guys shirts they're creased- ladies not creased ( I have no idea why) To avoid the crease, roll it as you press.
Spray starch can leave spots if the nozzle is not cleaned and make sure to shake well while spraying. Professional laundries put starch in the wash and iron while still damp until they're dry.

What kind of marks is the starch leaving? Scorch marks? It sounds like you are setting your iron too hot for the fabric and possibly using too much starch.

LIGHTLY spray the shirt with starch and wait a minute or two for the starch to absorb into the fabric. Ensure the temp. setting on your iron is appropriate for the type of fabric you are ironing. Do the back of the shirt first, followed by the sleeves, then the front, paying attention to the plackets (where the buttons and buttonholes are) and finish with the collar. Do not press a crease into the collar - just fold it down where the natural fold occurs.

For a really crisp finish, use a little extra starch on the cuffs, collar and plackets.

Hope this helps.

The professionals have industrial equiment to do the collars, cuffs, sleeves and body of the shirt. Your chances of being able to get the same flawless looking result at home with a household iron and board are slim.

Above are a couple of step by step instructions on how to iron a shirt that will help you. The eHow one is particularly helpful as it has pictures. I have thrown the link from Martha in thee since she is the queen but by far the best step by step instruction on how to iron a shirt I could find is from Video Jug http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-iron-a-shirt

If a picture is worth a thousand words than what is this video worth to you? -lol
