Think about it - do you think sticking needles into your skin would hurt? Over and over and over again?

The answer is YES.

It all really depends on what type and kind of tattoo you get...I got two on my shoulder blade at the same time and the only thing that hurt the most is the outline and thats it...the coloring in part didn't hurt at all.. it almost felt good... but it all just depends on whether or not you can take pain as well as others... they look really good though if you get a good one!

Yes, no matter where. But I must admit, that on the fatty parts of the body i.e. breast, inner thighs, will hurt less than a tat on bone. The best way that I've described to others that they can sort of identify with is... taking a saftey pin, and holding it at an angle, and scraping sort of hard. but no enough to actually create a gap of flesh. After a while, your body will adjust to the pain, and the area being tattooed will go numb.

Make sure you pick one that you KNOW you'll like, and where you'll like it.

Depends on location. More fatty regions like the buttocks, calf, thigh, side of arm aren't that bad in pain. Areas like wrist, ankle, shoulder where its almost direct to bone, can hurt a lot. Plus it depends on the size of the tat, number of colors in the tat, and how many sittings it will take to complete the tat.

If the pain is ever too much you can split the tat up into several sessions so you can deal with it better.

But part of the art of a tat....is the pain. Like a right of passage, pain is part of the process.

My experience is that for most areas it is like taking your fingernail and scratching it against your skin. No big deal.

However, areas that are close to bone (like, in my case, the backbone) will HURT!

But for me, it was kind of a test, and I had a little bit of fun, because the people around me were carrying on and moaning and grimacing. I decided, that instead of moaning and groaning, I would just try and smile lightly and breathe through it (rather Buddhist in fact, though I wouldn't have known that at the time).

It is so worth it, though. Besides the reward you will have with a carefully chosen tattoo (think through it for at least several months before you do it, and then reconsider, and be very sure that you choose something that you would still be proud to wear when you are 50, in my case a celtic cross), you also pass through something of an initiation ritual, wherein you fear the pain that will come, make yourself do it anyway, find out it wasn't so bad, and discover much about the problem of perception and how fear of things to come in the future often makes things seem much worse than they actually are.

Tattoos do hurt yes. They hurt more or less depending on how large or detailed and depending on which part of the body. The tattoo on my hip is about the size of a quarter, and it barely stung. The tattoo on my lower back hurt like hell and it is about the size of dinner plate. One word of advice...if you are planning on getting a tattoo, make sure it is well thought out. I got stupid trendy tattoos (tribal/kanji) when I was younger and six years later I want to puke every time I look at them.

Depending on the location and your tolerance for pain. Any sensitive place like the stomach and places near bone will be more painful than other areas.

Me personally, they dont hurt that much.

You have to go to a legit, clean tattoo parlor first. Check the place out before u get anything done, make sure its clean. It hurts as much as a cat scratch, no big deal.
