They are the most corrupt cops on the force.

They take bribes to clear an inmate of murdering another. and turn their back on all prison violence ( some of those inmates were wrongfully imprisoned)
They even murder inmates themselves. And if another officer tried to bring the corrupt ones down the warden will do what he can to "silence" them.
California State Prison is notoriouse for this

Why would they be despised by the public? What public are you talking about. I bet that they are hated by people who are in and out of jail frequently and maybe some of their family members, but no law abiding citizen would have any reason to dislike a prison officer. They are doing a job that I would never be able/willing to do and I am so grateful to them!

They are grossly overpaid for their intelligence and talents.

Their unions have to much power over state legislators, and often push for new laws so there will be more prisoners to take care of.

They are also frequently involved in scandals involving beatings and murder. They also bring drugs into the prisons.

I haven't heard of this. And why on earth would they be despised? Prison Guards are people that help keep bad people in prison and out of your way...I don't get it.

I don't think it is the public that hates them. I think it is their constantly degrading character that makes peolple not want to be around them.

Think about it, if you spent 8+ hours of your day with the scum of the earth, your personality would probably start declining too.
