I've recently installed windows xp on my computer, I upgraded it from 98, But now it seems that 98 is still on my hard drive and i think my computer is at a conflict on what program to run. My question is how do i clean all the old 98 files and prgrams out of my computer without deleting windows xp?. When i turn the computer on now, it seems to take forever before i can do anything!..It's driving me nuts..somebody help me please!

the problem is - XP requires A LOT more ram then 98 does.

so you're computer is going to seem slower -

My suggestion - go to crucible.com and get some more memory.

:)

First, I would do a Clean install. This is a very good way of starting new and eliminating any other problems you might have, such as conflicts with Windows 98. Look up instructions on "how to Fomat the hard drive" for further information. The XP disks should ask this option upon booting up from the CD.

Second, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and update the operating sytem. You will probably need to do this a number of times. Microsoft has had a lot of updates since the release of the operating system. You will need to reboot the computer a number of times before completing all of the updates.

Third, defragment the hard drive. This will increase performance somewhat. Not a whole lot, but it does help.

Fourth, If it is still slow at this point, then you will have to upgrade the memory. It's good to just do that anyways.

for windows 98, a 128 Mb of Ram would do all the tricks while for windows XP you need at least abt 512Mb to do the same task on the same given time,

depending on how much memory you have now, you might need an upgrade, so save up some bucks in case you need,

second reason could be, extremely high fragmentation is a common result of a upgrade process and several thorough defragmentation would take care of that, free defrag utility is intergrated into XP so feel free to use it as much as u need.

third reason, if you're not using the right drivers or firmware for the hardware that you have in your computer, you really need to download the XP drivers for those itemz, what i would do is, download and install WInXP drivers for all the components. believe it or not yes it slows down xp atleast 20times than it usualy do, since you came from 98, this is a must for you !

The best way is to boot to xp cd and do a clean install, rather than upgrade. Check your upgrade instructions to make sure you can do this. I'm pretty sure you can, but not certain. A clean install usually doesn't keep old files etc, while an upgrade does. Save anything you want to keep to a disc before you do clean install. Besides the above, the only other way I can think of is file by file, and that would take ages.

attempt aside from opportunities for confident, so u do no longer could wager: Reinstall residing house windows from scratch, and gain this on a right away internetconnection, without router, with an internetcable u understand that works (from one in each and every of ur different desktops) In different words create the main difficulty-loose set-up obtainable, with prevalent to be stable components, and notice if it works... If it does not artwork then u with relative certainty understand u do no longer could look at residing house windows, this could be waiting to handle internet, so then what's left is probably ur BIOS? (purely a wild wager, i've got been given no theory), If after a sparkling installation internet does not artwork wel it maximum easily isn't something u can exchange in residing house windows, something else, outdoors residing house windows, is going on... Modems could nicely be programmed i've got faith, so there must be an isue there, yet while ur different desktops artwork large... My superb wager it relatively is have been given something to do with ur router or cables or maybe some hardware interior the workstation.
