Attach the airline tubing to each outlet on your pump. Then cut the tubes that you don't need to about 1-2 inches long. Tape the unused tubes shut with duct tape (I used scotch tape). This will cut down on some of the noise.

Then I would recommend placing the pump on a grip sheet (I have no idea what they're called, but people place phones on them etc in their cars to prevent slipping- mine has a sticky side to it)

By placing the pump on this grip sheet - it won't vibrate on the table you place it on - which causes a ton of annoying noise.

Some air pumps though are just quieter then others - and you may need to replace the noisy one. What I suggested above worked great for me though - reducing the noise to a whisper.

Well, some of them are just plain loud. The cheaper ones tend to be louder so you may want to look into getting a better, quieter air pump. Some of them boast "quiet" and they are really quite quiet.

However, an air pump tends to make more noise when it's on an uneven surface, or if it's touching something like a wall or a lamp. It vibrates, so each time it vibrates it smacks the surface it's against and causes one heck of an awful racket. Make sure it's on a stable, flat surface, and not coming into contact with anything else.

Try these:(1) put an adjustable 'L' valve between the airpump output and the tubing--by adjusting the valve to release a little air,it might work (less pressure inside the pump).(2)prevent pump from touching surfaces: vibrations=noise.(3) try placing the pump on a hand towel folded 2 or 3 times. (4) if the pump is 'old', it might help if you replace the flapper valve(s) inside the airpump-they're cheap. Good luck.

If you fill the water up to the top of the tank, then there will be less space for the water coming up to the filter, which makes most of the noise. That made mine a little bit quieter. Hope that helps.
