I know someone close to me that does it. It's not something to be looked down upon. And they certainly are not doing it for attention, even though with some people it may seem that way. There's an underlying problem, perhaps it was an unfortunate occurance in their past and they're having trouble dealing with it. Maybe they were assaulted. The main reason they do it is to cover over the emotional pain with real pain. Also when the skin is cut it releases an endorphine in the skin and it's basically like a high, so yes it can become an addiction.
A lot of times people keep it a secret and when it comes out everyone thinks they're "messed up and why don't they see anyone for it". In my friend's case it's because she doesn't like people to know, and because she feels the way she deals with her depression works good for her so medication is just another way out, plus it's expensive when one doesn't have insurance.
You can liken it to people abusing alcohol or drugs, or even food to solve their problems. A lot of people that are overweight are for a reason. They're most likely depressed and food helps them feel better. They're also at serious risk just as much as people who self injure.
To Tracy, it's not that they want to die. Some do and some don't. The ones that test the boundaries so to speak are the ones that want to die. Planning what they will do, writing a letter, these are the ones that are more serious about wanting to die. The ones that cut just to escape a bad memory are simply doing it to escape a bad memory. And trust me...it does work.

Obviously you have never experienced depression; that's a good thing. You honestly don't have any idea what it is like to struggle with depression. It's a horrible awful thing for anyone to have to endure. A lot of people w/ depression do seek help by talking to parents, friends, counsler's and also seek medical treatments. Sometimes those supports do help, but they don't always cure the problem and they don't always make those suicidal, worthless feelings go away. Don't judge people on what they do and why they do it, until you have been in their shoes and know what its like to wake up everyday with the horrid feelings they do.

If your not mentally stable there's no telling what someone would do, I'm guessing this helps them focus on the pain then on what's really bothering me.
