Probably the best guitarist around during this time would be James Burton. He backed Presley most of the time and was a session man for Ricky (Rick) Nelson. Burton did not get the credit he deserved. Duane Eddy wasn't a brilliant guitarist - just had a good gimmic. Eddie Cochran was an excellent guitarist - but is probably better known for his songs. The greatest of them all in my eyes was Chet Atkins.

There were several but mainly instrumentalists. I saw Chuck Berry play and although he wrote good stuff he wasn't much of a guitarist. In US Bert Weedon, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Duane Eddy, Scotty Moore, Danny Cedrone (Bill Haley's Comets) and Buddy Holly were the main ones and in England Hank Marvin and Lonnie Donegan.

Chet Atkins (who invented a whole new style of playing) or perhaps Duane Eddy. Take your pick.
