We have had a Red Devil Cichlid for about 8 years. He is such a cool fish. We get so much enjoyment out of him! He is quite social, and very entertaining. :) When we got him he was only about 2 inches long.....he is now about 9 inches. How long can we expect to have him....how long do they generally live?

Anywhere around 12-14 years is normal, but they can live longer than that.

I like hearing about fish that become real pets! As opposed to most of the people here who get goldfish who die after 2-3 weeks in a tiny bowl.

Congrats on taking such good care of him :) I'm sure he's a happy fish and he's repaid your care with years of entertainment!

You should be careful about throwing the word "ignorant" around. Ignorant means uneducated, as you seem to be in the context of this discussion. While West Virginia has a high percentage of Caucasians, it is a blue state. It is likely that you've chosen your political color designations for the states based on something arbitrary and incomplete, such as the voting results of a single presidential election. This is just picking and choosing which facts to present solely to support your argument. To characterize a state's political nature, you need to look at more, and over a longer time period. You have to look at both the national office voting record (presidential and congressional offices) and the high level state election voting records (offices such as governor, state legislature, etc.), over a period of 10-15 years. If you go back and look at this with a broader view, you'll see that there is no political trend to be found here - the reason behind the numbers is not how they vote in elections, but something else. And if you do find a trend, that also doesn't prove anything - correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation. EDIT: Andy, that's not a very logical statement. Your information seems to indicate the Democrats are anti-geyser. We should inform Jon Steward and Stephen Colbert immediately so they can start doing something with this info. willjoeson, you're making those of us who rely on actual facts look bad. WV voted McCain in 2008.

They say Red Devils can live from 11 - 14 years. This obviously depends on many factors such as water conditions, illness etc. He should also be done growing too (Wow- 9 inches!) Their growth slows down after 3-5 years.

I would also guess around 10 years is a good lifespan for an RD kept in an aquarium. Congrats on keeping your fish well for so long. Hopefully there are years of enjoyment to come.

I would say probably 10 to 12 years. When I have fish that are gettinh older, I get me a small one of the same so that I will have a just like it when it dies. It's hard to lose a fish when you have had them so long :(
