Hey guys thanks for not making fun of my mis-spelled word, ruff, rough. I kind of thought grooming was the reason, just didn't know if there was something else I was not aware of.

Hi Diana...cats have bristly tongues (papillae) not only for grooming themselves but also to rasp meat off of bones from their prey that they eat.

Cat tongues are rough because they are needed to remove meat from the bone of the prey. It is also used for grooming to remove excess hair and goo in their fur.
Dogs usually have larger mouths and fangs. Plus their prey is much bigger.

Cats tongues are rough because they use them to groom themselves. Dogs don't focus on cleaning themselves too much, so that is why their tongues are soft.

Cats have the rough tongues for grooming purposes. Dogs dont have them because they dont need them. Cats also have 2 sets of taste buds.

It is the adaption that cats have in order to scrap more meat off bones. Because in the wild an animal will try and get as much meat as it can and this adaption allows it to get more.

cats use thier tounges for grooming and getting all of the loose hairs on thier bodies. Dogs use it for eating, tasting, and kissing. The rough toung on the cats again, is specifically for grooms themselves and their offspring

Because cats clean themselves using their tongues, and dogs can just clean themselves in water. Cats hate water. So their tongues are rough to comb their hair and remove all the dirt.

unlike dogs, cats depend on their tounges for grooming. Their tounge is kind of like a comb which brushes through their fur. that's why you often see them liking themselves all over on a daily basis.

this is a very simple question TO answer. it is because that they clean themselves and they like to have their fur to be purrrfect.they have the ruff tounge as like a brush or a sticky roller to get the things that are on their coat. on the other hand, dogs HATE to be clean( unless you have a pampered pooch) and they hvae a soft toung for licking their owners!if you have ever felt a cats tounge it feels all scratchy and most people dont like it.dogs dont clean their coat with their tounge so that is our job(but not with our tounges!)

Felines groom themselves with their tounges..Dogs just lick.
Hairball is the end result. They gather the loose hair to stay groomed.
