I am 34 weeks pregnant and this is based on what they did at my first appointment. When you first go in, they will make you pee in a cup (this time and EVERY time after!) Then, they will ask all sorts of medical questions like if you or the babies father has any medical conditions anywhere in your familes. Then, they will take probably 3-5 small tubes of blood for various tests. They will ask when the first day of your last mensrtal cycle was to determine a due date. They may check for the heart beat but since you are only 5 weeks, they may wait until your next appointment since usually, they cannot be heard until about 12 weeks. You will also get a pap smear and a breast exam. You should then go about every 4 weeks to the doctor and when you reach about 28 weeks, you go every 2 weeks and then at about 36, you go every week.

No on the heart beat... can't hear it yet. Can only see it in an U/S.
First off they will take your weight and blood pressure to benchmark for later apointment visits... then he'll do a pap smear, then he'll do an internal exam (put two fingers in there, push up on your cervix and push down on your abdomen to feel if your uterus is swollen, it should be if your pregnant), then he'll ask if you have any questions and possibly schedule you for an U/s to determine due dates. they can SEE the heartbeat at the U/S but still wont be able to hear it until your a little further along.

Usually they'll review the medical history of you, your family, and ask about the medical history of the father's family. They'll go over your current symptoms. If you haven't had a pap done in awhile you'll have one then, and also a physical exam. They will take down your weight, height, take a urine sample, and get some blood samples. They go over your LMP (last menstrual period) to figure out your Estimated Due Date (EDD).
Depending on your doctor you may or may not have your first sonogram to check the gestational age (which will give you a more accurate EDD) and to view the fetal pole and heart beat. (The heart beat will be seen on ultrasound as flashes of light.)

Well what we do when our patients come in for initial OB appointments is, they get a pap and breast exam done, GC Chlamydia testings, we test there urine for protein and glucose, go over any kind of medical family history, do a ultrasound, and give them any kinds of books brochures that they can use though out the pregnancy.
we see our patients at 10 weeks though not 5-6

you prolly won't hear the baby's heartbeat until your next visit, they'll do a pap smear, check your breast, take blood, give a urine sample, give you a due date and ask you alot of questions about your family medical history and the baby's father family too

Yes, expect this first visit to last a while. They will also give you info on healthy eating and lifestyle habits during your pregnancy, give you info on what to expect during your upcoming appts and upcoming tests, ask you to consider whether you want a circumcision for a boy, a hospital birth, a midwife. It's actually fun...bring the daddy along. Don't be surprised if they don't hear a heartbeat yet...it's still early!

Pretty much. They'll do a pelvic exam. If you are far enough along they will try to hear the heartbeat...they will probably schedule your dating ultrasound and try to determine the due date based on the first day of your last period. You'll have labs drawn and urine taken.....thats pretty much it...

More than likely that will be it unless you are a high risk pregnancy or they suspect a problem. Just don't be alarmed if they don't find the heartbeat yet....That's common.
