go to another vet, there are usually more than one around the area, its probably a tumor, and its falling off just like you said. Otherwise it was an abcess that is ulcertated and detaching. Unless its bleeding profusely, seeping puss, infected, or the hamster is very sick. keep it clean, watch if the Hamster is eating and drinking. Then get it in to the vet when hes not on vacation. You know I dont like it when people say my vet is on vaccation. Almost 99% of vets will have ANOTHER VET take over his practice or cover him while on vacation. A vet wouldnt loose precious money by going on vacation and closing his doors to his patients and there are vet techs available to help in emergencies. Call the darn tootin vet and see who he put in charge please.

I used to have 1 hamster which has such a syndrome too. In fact the growth was due to skin irritation. I believe your hamster has been licking the growth and the growth is hard and dry in looks. Dun worry too much about that. But do look at what you have changed to it's diet or environment recently or about the time of the onset of this growth. For my hamster, after the first growth dropped from it's ear, another one appeared on the neck. But after changing back to the old beddings, the new growth slowly subsided.
