My husband's ex girlfriend is having a baby next month (she just happens to be a good friend, she actually introduced us) and I need a unique baby shower gift. I don't want to get her clothes because she already has tons from her step brother, so I want it to be something original. I'm hoping I have a boy because I'm right behind her ;) That means plenty of hand me downs!

Boutique burp cloths. They are so cute. You can get them at any baby boutique or search for them on eBay. Check them out and see what you think.
Also, I think diapers are a GREAT gift! I got a ton and thought it was kind of stupid until I needed thousands of them and didn't need to buy any for about 4 months! Then I realized WHAT A GREAT GIFT DIAPERS ARE!!!!

Get her what she'll need most: diapers & baby wipes! Then you might add a small hand help toy.... like a stuffed animal with a baby rattle in it. This is to serve as small distraction for the baby when it's upset.... You know, like when you're trying to change a diaper or something. Lol....You can give her a card with a list of all the kiddie programs on it! As time passes, you both might want to let the babies check out a carttoon or two. As for clothing....onesies.....you can never have enough of 'em. If she already has them now....get the next size up. Babies grow really fast and it won't take much time for new needs to arise. Aside from that.... I can only think of a hair brush & comb set. Maybe a towel & washcloth... Well, you get the idea. Get her something the baby will need and then throw in something small like the toy. THAT will be most appreciated by the momma-to-be. Congratulations to both of you!! Good luck and remember....get enough rest along the way!

Definitely a unique gift would be something for mom. A nice bubblebath set or a gift certificate for a prenatal massage (ask the spas to see if anyone does them; I think not everyone can).

Also get something for baby. Diapers newborn to size 2, I remember blowing through quickly. A case of wipes from Costco was a good gift I received. They lasted longer than a case of Huggies or Pampers wipes and they were extremely portable and handy. When my daughter was old enough to grab at things, she liked toys that hang from the car seat. An exersaucer is a great gift, if you are looking to drop a chunk of change. My daughter loves it!

The best shower gift I received was actually the most practical of them all. It was a basket filled with baby shampoo and body wash, baby lotion, diaper rash cream, gas drops, diapers, wipes, hooded towels and wash cloths, baby Tylenol, etc. I use the basket in my living room to hold a set of all the diaper changing supplies so I don't have to go off to the changing table each time I want to change a diaper. It was great because these were the items that I hadn't bought yet and practical because they were things I really needed.

Is she nursing? If she plans to nurse, you could get her a boppy (these are SO useful) and a nice poncho. I had a poncho when I was nursing and it was SO useful. It was such a better alternative to draping a recieving blanket over my shoulder (which just screams--hey, look, I'm nursing!). They're fashionable, they cover the back, sides, and front, and the baby can't tug them off like a blanket. I put an example of a nursing one in the sources--but you can find less expensive ones other places that work just fine too. The main things to look for is it should be lightweight, washable, and you shouldn't be able to see through it.

Also, the following is something I WISH I had for my children when they were infants. Their heads would just slump down like a sack of grain every time we put them in the car seat. I would actually have to sit in the back and hold their heads up while my husband drove. This looks like it would really work:

You can get a diaper cake for her. These are really cool. They are diapers folded to make a 2-3 teir cake and wrapped with ribbon and stuffed with all sorts of useful baby items. Really cute!! Here's a website for one of the many sites that sell diaper cakes. You can make your own, too - there are instructions all over the internet.

This is funny. I too am friends with my husbands ex-girlfriend. She gave us some diapers wipes and some bibs. The bibs were special ones from hooters. She gave us diapers and wipes for our first and since the second baby was a boy the hooters bibs were cute.

I guess think of something you have in common and go from there.

My fav shower gifts I got and the most useful were diapers, bath stuff, butt paste, viberating baby boucer (my newborn loves this!). Another great gift is a gift certificate to sears portrait (or wherever you prefer). I received a portrait gift certificate and used it the second week my baby was born!

Get a CUSTOM diaper cake made to match the shower theme or her baby's nursery decor. It just so happens that I make these.... They are practical, beautiful, unique and unexpected.
