I've been married since October and I have not legally changed my last name yet. How do I do it? I feel like it's going to take forever to switch things over...that's why I have procrastinated so long. What information do I have to give/where do I go?

it's very easy & can be done the same day you go to your local Social Security Department, you need to bring your Marriage Certificate (it needs to be the original) they won't accept copies. You also need to bring your current Social Security Card, your Drivers License/Photo ID. You might have to pay a small fee, I'm not sure how much for you since it's different for every state, but just in case, make sure you bring some cash, maybe a check book might help as well just in case. Here's the link to the website for more information if you need it: http://www.ssa.gov/

Once you have changed your name with the Social Security Department & you got your new card (usually takes 1 or 2 weeks to get your new card) with your new name on it, you then can start calling all your creditors & tell them to change your name. They will ask you for proof, your new Social Security Card is your proof as well is your Marriage Certificate. They might ask you for a copy, be very careful who you send copies to. It's very risky since you will be vulnerable to identity theft. Find out if you can have it changed in person bringing your documents.
