I have read this novel about three times though it has been a least ten years since my last reading. I like the themes of duality that it presents as metaphor for dealing with the way life comes at us as both good and bad.

Any time any one is forced to do battle with themselves it can be very dramatic.

As for mood, Stevenson creates this tension by the juxtapostion of prim & proper geniality with primal rage.
