One interesting aspect of WWII that I am currently reading about is all the scientists (physicists, chemists, biologists,...) that left or were expelled from Germany due to the Third Reich. From the time the Nobel Prize was first awarded up until about the time that Hitler came to power, German scientists had been awarded something like 1/2 of all Nobel prizes. They were far and away the world's scientific leaders. Many of them were Jewish though, and many that were not, had Jewish colleagues and/or were appalled at the anti-intellectualism of the Nazis. As a result, a lot of these great scientists went to Britain and the U.S. (including the ones that helped develop the atomic bomb), which had an effect of diffusing or shifting this great scientific knowledge all over the world. In a lot of cases, it enhanced the work of a lot of these scientists too, because it gave them "new life". It's hard, and scary, to imagine how the world would be different if that scientific knowledge were put to use by the Nazis to do evil rather than to do good. (Not that these scientists would have done the same work for Hitler. With the atomic bomb in particular, most of them didn't want to use their scientific knowledge of nuclear fission to create a bomb, but they were afraid that if they didn't, Hitler had people that would do it first.)
