Do aquarium plants have to be in a cycled tank or can i put them in before it cycled

No. Plants do not produce ammonia, so they will not suffer from ammonia burn unless the ammonia is ultra high (like 10). They will have no impact on your cycle, although if part of the plant rots, this will produce some ammonia.

You can put aquarium plants in your tank before the tank is cycle. The plants if given enough light would probably take in some ammonia during cycling, but I don't really think that would impact your cycling of the tank.

You can put plants in before its cycled but make sure you dont get any sensitive plants because some will die off in the presence of high waste. You can do some quick research on plants online to find out the most hardy. Also make sure you have the proper lighting or the plants will die and create more waste in the water.

Most are hardy and actually help speed up the conditioning of the tank. Just check for stowaways if its a bushy type plant.
