well, i'm not completely sure, but I found a story where it says almost the same thing, in just a little different way.....why don't you check it out, perhapse it will help answer your question.

It's a way to accentuate the grandeur of what they're seeing. They have lived a long time, that is to say while tall oaks were still acorns, and they haven`t seen such a thing before them.
