What do you need to look at when you are checking ignition timing?

Personally, I took my car into a guy who specialized in timing. My car was off by a little but it wasn't too bad. Usually you can tell by watching your RPMs and listening for the change when it should happen. But then again, if you have no experience driving a standard, my info means nothing to you lol
Hope I was a little help at least :)

Go to a local automotive store and buy a timing light. This light hooks up to your battery and the #1 spark plug, this makes the light work ( and a cause it to flash). to set the timing you aim the light onto your belt. Take note that every car is different and you need to look for dash marks on the front of your motor where your belt is. when you find those dash marks then shine the light on those dash marks and make sure that the belt is in between the marks and the light. When you look at the marks while shining your light you would see a mark. This is the mark that shows you your timing of your car. To adjust it you need to adjust the distributor. If you have questions please ask me.

It is done utilizing what is called a Timing Light and reading an indicator on the harmonic balancer and a gage mounted near it. you get the specs from a shop manual or repair manual and you turn your distributor to the appropriate position to put your engine in tune. This is the basic answer and on newer cars I don't believe it would work this way. in any case get a repair manual and it will tell you how to accomplish this on your vehicle!

you will need a timing light to check it and it will come with instructions on how to use it note though that on many of the newer cars it is all set by the engine control module (or computer) anyway
