The lcd on a laptop has gone totally black. With a flashlight pointed to the screen I can see that WINXP starts up and is working perfectly, so i'm asuming the black screen has something to do with the ccfl or perhaps the inverter. Does anyone have an estimate on how much it would cost to fix the display problem or if this has nothing to do with the ccfl but something else?

No, the screens don't cost $500, if you know what you're doing. Also, if your screen is dim and not completely black, your problem is most likely the INVERTER, not the backlight.

The inverter should be roughly $100. Not sure how much the labor would be, if you choose to have someone else repair it. This process is rather simple, though.

You can get a good idea of how much the cost will be, for the part, at http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com .

If you find you need a new screen, try http://www.screentekinc.com

Good luck.
