I need help finding a 3 or 4 star hotel in Montreal. Which neighborhood?

We are planning a trip to Montreal from Pennsylvania, USA. We've never been there before. I am looking for a hotel recommendation in a fun area of town. This is a pleasure trip, not business. Ideally, I am looking for a 3 or 4 star hotel in an area that has a lot of attractions and shopping within walking distance.

I need specific recommendations. I don't know any of the neighborhoods so TripAdvisor, Expedia or the other usual suspects are of no use to me.

I am amazed that prior Answerers in toto have only mentioned the Ritz-Carlton of the several 3 and 4 star hotels that cluster around the Sherbrooke Street/Park Ave/University St blocks. There are also Sheraton, Delta, HJ and others. In the middle of an area with several of our many museums, McGill University and many restaurants and clubs that service it and quite quickly within walking distance of what remain of our downtown department stores. It is probably one of the preferred hotel areas for knowledgable American businesspeople, especially those that do not speak French. Unfortunately it is in a more English area and lacks a lot of the charm of the more French sections (where also exist the greater part of our better restaurants and shops) but those areas just a few métro stops away.

I travel to Montreal each year and always stay at the Intercontintal, old Montreal. It offers a nice room with plenty of views, altho the best is the window facing the water.
Old Montreal is within easy walking distance and up town is only a short metro ride, about 20 min. You can gain acess to the metro without ever going outside.
The room we stay in offers a quality, king size bed, with a bath as big as our living room at home. The sheets are pressed and of the finest quality. The TV is rather loud on turn on, but that is the only problem about that. The mini bar is fully stocked and the prices in the mini bar are the same as the bar downstairs.
Check in is always fast and they do offer a speedy check out. The breakfast is great-the cheifs there really know how to prepare what you like on the spot. The bar in the lobby offers peanuts, mixed nuts and pretzels when down for your evening drink before heading up to your room. The cosmos are a little pricey, but the best I've ever had.
The conceride (I am not sure on the spelling) is willing to go above and beyond. One year, I needed a broom handle (we travel there for the Formula 1 race) to show off my new flag. About an hour later, they delievered one to my room and the next year, already had one in the room apon arrivial.
Bags are brought up to your room in a timely mannor-just don't forget to tip! I know over Grand Prix weekend, if you stay on the 24-25 floor, you get acess to the "special" room on the top floor. Cocktails, a quiet breakfast...it's very relaxing.

I'm from New York, and I was just in Montreal 3 weeks ago to catch a hockey game. We stayed right in downtown, at a place called Hotel Du Fort. Downtown Montreal is not a busy place at all, it's not like Manhattan or anything, so don't worry about traffic. It has its own secure parking garage as well. Very good hotel, right in the middle of Montreal. Check it out. The rooms are very very spacious, and if you stay on a higher level you have a nice view of the rest of Montreal. Here is the website. Montreal is a very easy city to get around in. My wife and I visit it often with our kids . It is not to large yet, for many things you will have to take the Metro. Montreal's Metro (Subway) system is great, very easy to understand. From many hotels like the
Marriott & The Queen Elizabeth you can descend to the Underground directly by elevator from the hotel Lobby. If shopping is important then diffenetly stick to "Centre ville" (Downtown) St, Catherine Street & Peel st. etc will keep a shopaholic busy for days. If you have kids do the Bio-dome and the Insectarium at the Botanical garden.

If you like art, 2 blocks up from St. Catherine go to
Musee des Beaux Arts, --Don't go to the ticket both, go to the display next to the entrance, put in a donation and enter free--the tickets at the counter only get you in to whatever traveling show they have in. the rest of the Museum will take a full day at least.
Taxi's are not a bad choice in Montreal also

The best place to stay is downtown...

This location is on Crescent street which is a well known street with a lot of bars and restos. It is right near St Catherine street a huge strip of great shopping. Sherbrooke Street is a few streets away, lot's of museums, McGill University.

Long story short, Montreal has one of the best Transportation systems in North America and is an easy city to get around walking or by the Metro (equivalent to your American subway system)

Like I said before, if you stay downtown it is really hard to go wrong, everything is in walking distance and it is an easy city to get around.

Must eat our Montreal Bagels, smoked meat, poutine, french pastries for bread, croissants and pastries that taste they were meant to taste!

Montreal food cannot be beat! We are known to be one of the best food cities in the world, people are beautiful and stylish and shopping is fantastic!

Have a great time and attempt a few words in French and you will be treated just fine:)

The NOVOTEL, right across from the Grey Nuns' Mother House.
It's within walking distance of the subway (Metro) and lots of shopping, and one block from St. Catharine Street, the main street of downtown Montreal.

Try the Ritz Carlton, it is in Up town and in an area full of bars and restraurants.

Alternatively try The InterContinental in Old Montreal in the 18th 19th century part of town
