Depends on the file extension. If its an Office file, like word or excel, you'll need that program to look at it. Find out what program was used to create it, and use the same program to open it.

ok this is not a big problem. however your system sounds like it does not have the appropriate software to open the file.
so first stop fretting. and email the person who sent iot to you and ask them what program created the file. they sent you.
failing that you can browse the internet to look up the .ext (the file extension the .doc .exe.htm etc.) of the file. this will tell you what program can open the file.
what is the extension of the file you have been sent?
.ppt that needs Microsoft powerpoint or powerpoint viewer. the viewer is freely available from the microsoft.com website by searching for viewers download them all. at least then your system will be able to handle the microsoft file types that people may send you.
however without knowing the extension of the file i can not help you further sorry.

my email is always open. so if you have any further questions or need help on this or other computer related problems then mail me via my profile. or use the address i set up on my mail server for Y! answers users to message me.

@garylsmith1973.
homeip.net
put the last three lines together to form my email address. this board does not accept the address as one long line. (damn y! answers.
i hope this helps even a little. it may be easier to forward the message and attachment to me and i'll see what program it needs and then i can let you know. if you do not want to seem silly to your work friend message me or try to solve it yourself using my suggestions.

you need to look up what the extension is and what programs can be used to open that extension. (file type).

that is the best i can suggest without knowing the extension of the file.
the idiots telling you to forward the mail from one account to another on the same computer will make no difference if your computer does not have the software to open the file type then what ever mail reader you use will not be able to open the file.

As stated.. tell what the file extension is and what application windows recommends..

This warning is extremely common... and will pop up hundreds of times.

My advice, look for the programme windows suggests you open the file in and use that.

What is the file extension. Right click on the file and select Properties. It will give info including the File Type. Post that and maybe someone can give you an answer.
