If the garbage companies see a closed container of paint (oil based or latex), they will not take it. They want you to leave the lid off, let the paint dry up, then throw it away. You can speed the drying by spreading the paint out to provide a thinner layer to dry.

Dump it out on plastic or cardboard. Leave the cans open then let everything dry. After that it is no longer a liquid. Just bag it up and throw it all away in the regular trash.
