Overdrive is essentially any gear with a ratio less than 1 (ie .85:1 or .65:1). This means that the engine is spinning slower than the transmission which nets better mileage. This is good when all you're doing is maintaining speed on the highway.

Overdrive is a gas saving optional gear that is mainly used for driving on the interstate, but it shouldn't be used to go up and down steep inclines and stuff like that. It's a super high gear that keeps the engine from going so fast, so it gives you better gas mileage for long trips. Hope this helps!!!

overdrive is an "extra" gear when a constant speed will be used for awhile. the rpm's lower and the car should run more effeciently in this gear. when i put my car into "D", it's overdrive for my car, there's not an extra gear there anymore
