If you are replacing the old 120 volt heater with a new 120 volt heater it is very simple. From the wall, box or depending on how yours is set up you will have probably a black, white, and a bare copper. The Black is hot. White is neutral, and the bare copper is ground. Your new heater should be the same. But usually the black on the appliance will always be the hot. If you are installing a 220 volt water heater you will have to upgrade the wire to 10-2 w/ ground. Then your breaker will have to be changed to a 2 pole 30 amp breaker. A 220 volt supply on a 10-2 w/ ground wire carries a 110 voltage on each of the wires and there is no neutral. Overall its still very simple. write my e mail if you need more help. Good luck!

The best way to do this to take note of what your taking apart and and how it would go back together on the new water heater. This also goes for anything project that you would do. The key is to remember what goes with what. For instance when wiring it look at the color of wires most people would say black with black and this is found to be true. but most things have the same color of wires and if this is the case you need to establish which wire is the "hot" or wire that is the one bringing the electricity to the pump. Then connect to the white wire on your new pump. Be aware when taking the wires apart from your old water pump, DO NOT LET THE WIRES TOUCH EACH OTHER. This would cause a spark and could cause a fire and be careful when wiring your new water pump.
