Australia is a continent, as well as an island.
The continent of Australia is comprised of (in order of size) the Australian mainland, New Guinea, Tasmania, and intervening islands, all of which sit on the same continental shelf.
(Note: New Zealand, is often considered part of the Australian continent politically Acutally, it is a separate continental body, compising Zealandia, also known as the New Zealand continent, of which 7% is dry land.)
The Commonwealth of Australia is the main island of the continent, made up of 6 former English colonies.
Antarctica is the only continent which is truly comprised of one country/territory, but it also includes coastal adjacent islands.

It is characterized as both...it is an island continent. It illustrates how feeble such characterizations can become.
Taken to a further extreme, cannot the Americas be considered one large island. Ditto Eurasia?
And why is Europe considered a separate continent from Asia. No other continents are separated by mere mountain ranges.
These are all just human constructs. Best not to take them as cut and dried.
