Toshiba was the first to the market with a laptop computer. They continue to make a great product for a good price. Dell would be my next choice, then Gateway, and finally HP / Compaq is the last. HP / Compaq's quality has really gone downhill since the buyout (in my opinion). Needless their outsourced tech support is not that good either. But, then again, perhaps I am biased against them as I used to work for Compaq.

Since you are not really using it for intense applications, I would recommend a lower end machine. Being in school you do not want to spend a lot of money. Plus if your laptop is dropped or lost or stolen, you are not out as much money. You can always get a new unit down the road. All of the other suggestions are good when it comes to manufacturers. They all use similar components. HP and Compaq seem to offer better value for the same items. But Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Gateway, and other manufacturers are all good. Spending more money on the latest technology would be wasted on your particular usage. They all seem to have wireless capabilities built in today. I like the $500 to $700 price range. You want the best value for the money. Not always the cheapest.

Will you be using the computer for anything else? You need to decide what sort of software will cover your needs.
If you are looking at a higher spec machine then an Apple Mac or a name brand PC will cost about the same for the hardware. The Apple Mac will likely cost less when you include the bundled software.
Note that if you wanted something lower end and therefore less expensive you can go that route if all you do is what you have listed. Most machines will have built in wireless.
The PC is generally a bit harder to deal with than a Mac. Most people will agree. My mother loves her Mac for that reason. That decision is up to you.

Since you're not a big gamer and you're wanting to use the computer for basic computing. I'd suggest any of the dell or gateway machines listed at www.tigerdirect.com as you can get a decent machine for $700 US including shipping. I've purchased two laptops from them. Never any issue.

I would go with a Hewlett Packard. They have good prices and are top notch quality. I have owned a desktop, and currently own a notebook pc, both by HP. I have not had any major issues with either. I love my HP notebook, it does everything I want and more! HP also has excellent customer service and support (check out the link to their site below) I would highly recommend an HP.

Dell D820, or if you can find one, a D800.
If you can afford it a Sony Toughbook is basic, sturdy and a great buy as well.
