You are comparing a QX6700 to a 3.6GHz Pentium 4.
As the previous answer stated, there really is no comparison. The QX6700 is hands down better in every way. The QX6700 has 4 cores to the Pentium 4's one core (with a virtualized hyperthreaded core).

Each one of the 4 QX6700 core much faster than the one core on the Pentium 4 - but now you have 4 of them. The processor uses less power, and it's much more "future proof" than the Pentium 4.

There's a review here:

Use the Pentium 4 640 as your Pentium 4, although at 3.6GHz (to the 3.2GHz in the review), the Pentium 4 3.6GHz will be a bit faster - so fudge the scores to be 20% faster. Still, the QX6700 wins hands down in everything.

The future is multi-core - especially in games. If you want to be "future proof", you definitely want the QX6700. Games like "Alan Wake" are specifically targeted at multiple cores. http://www.alanwake.com/

Not that it has anything to do with your question, but check out these Alan Wake screenshots: http://www.alanwake.com/screenshots/screenshot.php?shot=Alan_Wake_2006_003

Pretty amazing.

Well if those are your only two choices, I then definately go with the Core 2 Quad, but you are basically saying do I need the Ferrari or the Yugo, their is a middle ground, a Core 2 Duo will give you very high performance without that ultra high price tag.

There is no comparison between Intel's Quad-Core processor with any other product in the Intel family. If you can afford the Core 2 Extreme(quad-core), then you must go for it!

i would actually recommend a core 2 but not a quad core....

the quad core is used priamrily for huge video editing or graphic design stuff where they run lots and lots of different things at once.

but a good gaming one would be the extreme,
