Coal is the remains of ancient forests, buried for millions of years. All coal is not the same because it was buried at different depths, different lengths of time, etc. So there is soft coal and hard coal.
Petroleum is formed from decayed organic material from the sea. It is often found in layers of rocks that are the sorts of rocks formed in shallow oceans. There is often salt water assocaited with it.
Natural gas (methane) is the simplest hydrocarbon, so it can formed from the decay of just about any kind of organic material such as sewage, rotten wood, or old coal or petroleum. Natural gas can be made on purpose by forcing the decay or chemical breakdown of these materials or it can be found in oil wells where the oil has broken down and the gas has been trapped in the rocks.

Goddidit? How 'bout the flooddidit? Plants and animals were buried by the mud in the flood, and as water increased, so did pressure. Oil is made in labs-just google it. And how about you explaining how these things sat on the ground for millions of years while being sedimentarily covered with enough dirt to cause enough pressure to do the job without rotting or being scattered by animals. Ever seen a mudslide? Global mudslides cause global distribution of oil. And if the oceans were already there, why is oil found in the ocean? You have many more Q's to answer concerning coal and oil than young earth creationists do.

U know that thin g about CO2. Mother nature has 2 recycle in nature . first the plants absorber CO2 and holds on to the C and the plants give us back the O2 . That is 1 cycle . Now Back to where the plants held to the C ,it creates food for the plants so they grow big and then comes winter and all the leaves and limbs float down the river to the delta where it deteriorates to Gas Oil and when the oil has been there foe a long time it becomes coal. Study photosynthesis.

Okay, I just talked to a talking snake and this is what he said. Sure, I waterboarded him... but... here's the transcript: Me: How did oil, coal and natural gas get in the earth? Snake: Name, rank and serial number. According to the Geneva Convention, that's all I have to disclose. * water and boards and stuff * - you know - Christian entertainment ... and then... after about 10 seconds... Me: How did oil, coal and natural gas get in the earth? Snake: 6,000 years ago, God had to go... you know... #2

Oil comes from dead animals, tiny decomposed animals, infact, did you know that the Caribbean islands were formed from dead animals building up in one spot? Trees started growing on this mass of carcasses from fish, and the trees decomposed to make dirt.
And natural gas is just simply an element that exists on Earth, just like how air and rock exist. Coal just happens to be the same thing.
