It's defined as the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle.

(The formula for a circumference is C = 2(pi)*r, where r is the radius... so pi = C/(2r). Diameter = 2*r by definition.)

There are several definitions. One is: Pi is that number equalling the ratio of any circle's circumference divided by the circle's diameter.
