I concurr with scottaich (thumbs up)
Black soot and loss of power suggests that your piston rings are worn or leaking badly. Take it to a garage that offers a tune up or 'krypton tuning' service.
If it's bad i'm afraid this won't fix it but it will give you a diagnosis of what's gone wrong.
From there you can decide how best to tackle the problem.

Sounds like you might need a rebuild on the motor, blue/black smoke usually means oil is being burned with the gasoline in your motor, the sooty stuff backs this up=burnt oil, probably bad piston rings/cylinder bore, that would account for the loss in power too, how many miles does it have on it?

One of your cylinders is choked with carbon. It is a common problem with the Zetec engine.I assume you a British,if you are it is quite an easy job for a garage and should cost less than 100 quid to rectify.

Well black smoke tells me it's fuel, and not engine oil which is blue, but without looking it's a job to tell ,Sorry

It sounds like it's time to start reading the "Cars for Sale" adverts.

You need to get car anti smoking patches, your local mechanic or doctor may be able to help you.
