Yes, I watched 4 kids - monsters, every one! - and got paid 25 cents an hour! This was back in the early 70's. Scarred me for life!

Babysitting was actually my 2nd job.My first job was when I was about 10. I walked this little kindergarten kid to school. I got $1 a week for this. That was big money for a 10 year old in the mid 70s. With babysitting I jumped up to $1 an hour (about 2 years later). I was in the big time then (at least I thought I was).

My first job was at the age of 6, selling lemonade at the end of my driveway. Earned quite a bit of money too.

Then by the age of 9 I was selling the excess produce from our family garden to the housewives in the neighbourhood. I had orders to sell one particular neighbour all of the beefsteak tomatoes I could get my mom to allow me to sell. But the rest happily bought cucumbers and carrots and beets and things. I did this every summer until I was 12.

By the time I was 10, I had taken over my brother's paper route. He turned 15 and thought he was too old for this. So, with the help of my older sister and my younger brother (13 and 8 respectively) we managed to deliver the 120 papers daily. (Which was darn hard in the cold Canadian winter!) I did this until I was 14, and turned it over to my youngest brother entirely.

My first babysitting job was at the age of 12. Taking care of a neighbour's son and daughter, who were 9 and 6. Little heathens! Their parents had a hard time controlling them, yet I managed to find the magic formula by the second babysitting job, and was able to get them to behave for me, and do anything I wanted. I sat these guys about twice a month until the family moved when I was 18.

I had my first full-time paid job at 16 (I graduated high school early), as a file clerk for an accounting firm. Talk about BORING!

Then summer I was 17 I worked for a directory service that employed people to go door to door to learn who lived at what address, and what they did for a living...information that people would not ever supply today. Soon quit that job though, when the heat and humidity had the average daily temperature at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the company required us to dress in dark slacks and jacket at all times.

Then I went on to my higher education. (Which I guess you don't need to hear about!)

My first job was taking care of my little brother. Then I took care of other kids. It was a good way to get spending money. I took care of 4 children for a couple of summers while school was out and their parents worked. Then I became a teacher, which sometimes felt like babysitting!
