While no one can answer such a subjective question, I'll try to help.
First, wait until post Jan 30 when Vista ships on all new pcs. Buy one that already has Vista installed, don't get a guaranteed upgrade. You want the computer hardware to be Vista-capable as Vista will require some advanced hardware.
Second, decide what your main objective is in buying a computer. Games, videos, pictures, what? Then, search for computer models that come with GREAT software already installed that does the kind of stuff you want to do.
Software is the biggest expenditure when buying a computer, simple as that. So buy already installed software of the kind you will use and you will save lots of money.
PS. It's also a good idea to look at the web site of the model you are considering to buy, to see if there are any known problems that have cropped up, either with that system or with Vista. See what the fix is.
Good Luck

Well, I have no brand-specific suggestions as that is just childish. The only thing that might keep you away from brands is crappy customer service. Anyway, you'll want to make sure to get a Core 2 Duo CPU (don't confuse this with Core Duo) because they are quite fast for how much they cost.

i can not recall the exact model of the computer but these are the specs and it goes on sale at staples for about $1100 on febuary 1st.
AMD 64X2
1GB of RAM
100GB hardrive.
full size keyboard
17in widescreen
wireless receiver
VISTA (the new OS)
BUY IT FAST BECAUSE IT WILL SELL OUT TRUST ME ITS A COMPUTER THAT WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. DO NOT GET DELL OR GATEWAY THEY ARE MOSTLY REMANUFACTURED PARTS INSIDE. HP OR COMPAQ OR SONY IS THE WAY TO GO. IF YOU CAN NOT GET THE LAPTOP I JUST TOLD YOU ABOUT JUST REMEMBER TO GET AN AMD 64 X2 PROCESSOR IT IS THE BEST ONE OUT RIGHT NOW AND 512MB OF RAM OR HIGHER.

LMAO....$1000 would get you the lowest end laptop Apple has.....they are pricey!
The best advice I can give you is to stay away from HP/Compaq and Gateway. I have been using Dell's and had great experiences with them. I am sure you will get other qualified suggestions, but Dell is usually my first recommendation. Regardless of the brand you get, be sure to spend the extra money on the extended warranty. Laptops tend to get knocked around and the longer warranty will save you a lot of heartache.

It depends on what is important to you in a laptop - what are you going to use it for and what will help you most. You might check out PC World's lists as a starting point.
