Just wondering. My friend is 17 and he has really bad cholesterol. And the thing is, he isn't even overweight...He is very skinny (I always expect someone with bad cholesterol to be overweight). He eats fast food all the time and that is why he has this problem. I have been trying to get him to stop eating fast food...cooking him a healthy dinner when I get the chance (he is raised by his mother who works two jobs, so she doesn't cook, only brings Wendy's or Burger King home for him).

Please help me. Thank you.

he should eat instant oatmeal for breakfast everyday. it only takes a minute. He can also buy these fish oil supplements from the pharmacy you have to take before each meal. He can still eat fastfood and not take in as much cholestrol if he chooses the right foods. Go on wendy's and bk's websites and look up the nutrition facts for their foods. And I also want to add, you can't try to control his diet. It's his life, and you can't make him do anything he doesn't want to. All you can do is be supportive and give him help in making the right food choices.

Flash - you do not have to be older or overweight to have hyperlipidemia. In some cases, it is familial or genetic. It still requires intensive treatment with medications to avoid later heart disease. Fast food alone would not seriously elevate cholesterol in a 17 year old. A thorough physical exam with lab tests is indicated.

I myself have high cholesterol and I am very skinny. Th best thing you can do for him is make him lots of green veggies and nothing fried. Right now, I am wearing a rubber ring (like those new wristbands) that says 'eat better', and whenever I see something fried, I look at it for support. I think it's part of an orginization called eat better America.

Whole grains and fruit

I did the whole grain cereals, Shredded wheat, corn flakes, Old Fashion Quakers Oats (instant doesn't count), Whole grain breads
and muffins My HDL went from 34 to 73 in a year

My local deli does 'roll up sandwiches' on whole wheat

Ask mom to bring home some the chicken type salads. a least half the time.

He can be skinny and still have high chloresterol if the only food he eats contains fats and trans fats. Most are 100 calories in one tablespoon.

For myself, I eat an oatmeal cereal for breakfast, oat bread with Smucker's natural peanut butter and low-sugar jelly for lunch, homemade salad dressing with olive oil for dinner, and fresh fruit with a small amount of Cheerios for TV pickings, and I still have to take vytorin. Age and heredity play into it. In my case, it is probably age and the slowdown of metabolism.

I'm sure your friend doesn't want to have a stroke - and it can happen at any age. Go to www.webmd.com and download some literature for him. Then, if you care for him, pray.

lowering colesterol with out taking pills

could only be done by diet modification
and lots of exercise, but if he has a cronic
problem from always eating the wrong foods

he might only be able to correct his imbalance
by medication.

but you must be careful here, colesterol drugs
are know to damage your liver.so he must only
take after seeing a doctor and being monitored
for liver danage on a monthly basis.

It's all about the oatmeal baby! Oddly though, it's important to note that the "Old-Fashioned Oats" that take longer to cook have greater benefits. Also, cut out the fast food!
