For the last couple of years my roomate has not been able to pay his rent on time and i'm not really sure what to do about it. My roomate works for a grocery chain and this started two years ago when they had that big union strike, i was leanient back then because he wasn't employed consistently and he was trying to find other work and make money where he could. Now nearly two years later the strike has long been over and he still rarely pays on time. Usually just when I start to get fed up he will pay me on time for 2-3 months and then it stops again.

This month he has yet to pay his rent but says I will have it this week. A couple of things really piss me off, he recently bought a new car which is stupid if you can't pay the rent on time. I also suspect that he bought a snowboard and went snowboarding this month instead of paying the rent.

He is a long time friend of mine and I don't want to just kick him out and I don't want to have to find a new one, what should I do??

Friend or not, he is not pulling his weight. Give him a date to move and start advertising for a new roomie. If he gives you a hard time, pack his stuff, get your key and tell him he is not a friend, he is using you and you have had enough. The longer you let it go on , the more he will do it.
He already has thrown mud in your face when he bought the new car.. what are you waiting for a billboard sign. Take back some control here and tell him, his time is up.

Well for starters, let him know that he NEEDS to pay his share on time. I don't know how picky your landlord is, but in alot of cases, if you can't get ALL of the rent in on time then all parties involved get evicted. Just tell him, gently, that if he can't get his rent to you on time you'll have to find a different roommate that's more responsible. If he calls your bluff, start looking.

He's not a true friend/roomate. Can him.
