Has Britain really became such a dishonest and moraless country that the people in it have stooped to the level of looting, such as what has happened in places such as Iraq? I found the scenes of people stealing the stuff washed up on the shore absolutely disgusting, these people are no more than common thieves, 2 or 3 decades back, people would not have dreamt of doing any such thing. Some one has even had the brass neck to steal a Motorbike from the ship. It's a disgrace!

Since when was stealing £15000 motorbikes or taking parts from cars Beachcombing??? Maybe lifting the odd item is OK, but when people flock en masse onto a beach and start taking tens of thousands of pounds of gear, it is no longer Beachcombing!!!

By the way, did I say what they are doing was illegal? No! I'm saying it's immoral what they are doing, and just basically wrong, it isn't their stuff to take!

I agree with you. I thought it was awful but this happens all over the world when there's a ship wreck. You're allowed to take it and store it (theoretically) and then report it as salvage etc etc..but they're just stealing it aren't they? It's really undignified and where's their self respect?
It's not legal actually. How many of these people do you think are cataloguing this stuff for future return? As for the whisky galore story...do you know what really happened to these people in the true story? they were prosecuted and their lives were made hell. The whole Island was turned over and every single house was searched and dozens of them went to jail. They were made an example of.
Where are people getting the idea from that it's legal to take this stuff and keep it? It's not! That's not what salvage is!!!!!!!!!!!
Well how about saving it for the people who actually own it? (if we're going to be moral about it and you're that worried about it becoming a hazard) and No, I wouldn't go down to seaside and start stealing if it happen near me.... Don't judge me by your standards. The stuff's being stolen. I reckon a lot of it has already been sold off and however you want to justify it, or make your self feel better because you'd also go out there and start stealing...it's still stealing.

Where have you been all your life.
The coastal dwellers in Devon and Cornwall, years ago made their living from Wrecking and Smuggling.
They would deliberately guide ships onto the rocks, in poor weather, and steal the cargo, probably killing any surviving crew.
Some years ago a vessel carrying timber floundered off the Devon Coast, the Public were within their rights to salvage the wood that washed up onto the shoreline. They were shown on the television and the authorities allowed it.
I would suggest that were you in the position of seeing perfectly sound items that, if not salvaged, would be destroyed by the elements, and you were legally allowed to salvage, you would do the same.
Why do you think Dutch and English salvage firms spend £millions on equipment to salvage vessels and cargo. Do they do it for love not on your life, they do it for money.
To compere it to looting in Iraq or following riots in whichever city in whichever country in the World, is a joke. There is no comparison whatsoever. Although if you take Iraq for instance the Americans didn"t, they stood by and let it all happen. I"ts a good job no one tried to loot the oil, then there would have been trouble.
Common thieves, I don"t think so, you will have to look at Westminster for them, try 11 Downing St for a start

I agree. Resorting back to the pirate days, eh? It is very sad but what can you do? The motorbike was absolutely crossing the line. But as for the washed ashore stuff???? Who's responsibility is it to get picked up? You just can't leave it on the beach. Could pose a potential danger to children etc. They should of collected it and kept it until the company could retrieve it.

Despite what moral views we may have, the beach combers are within the law when removing items from the beach as long as the person declares it to the police. I suspect many will not declare and the said items will shortly appear on EBay!

'Ain't you seen the film "Whisky Galore" ? this has gone on since ships have sailed, it's just that they don't run aground so often these days, things are a lot safer with computer navigation! The stuff still belongs to the ships owners, it's up to them to guard their property, just as you do in your own home, there are always people out there who will take advantage of a disaster!

Grow up, I bet you would be one of the first people at the site if you lived anywhere near. They are doing nothing wrong as long as they fill a form in. Even the police are on the beach and they have no powers to stop them because it isn't a crime.

Looting? it's called beach coming and it's legal so whats your point? Good on them it's all covered by insurance so don't stress man! In the past people used to lure ships on to rocks so they could get the booty !

it is legal to take the things off the beach as long as you inform the police to what you have taken in case some one claims it.
