What about trying some pointalism (instead of lines, use a bunch of small points). Try that and then also try smudging them. To smudge, get a sturdy shop-type of paper towel and fold it several times until you get a sharp point (kind of in a triangle from folding it). Use that point to rub the pencil strokes or points to "smudge" them. It will soften them and make it look "smokey" or fuzzy. If you don't have a sturdy paper-towel, try another sheet of paper that you've folded into a flat, pointed shape.

We did this in school.

there is some website where if you draw one letter it will make the rest of the alphabet. I teach art, I just would sketch smokey or puff shaped bubble letters and manipulate them to look like smoke. If you want wispy -draw them wispy, if you want puffs puff the letters:) Hope this helps. It also may help to draw them in block letters first, then position then change them.
You can also draw the shape you want the whole smoke shape look like, then fashion the letters in that single shape, just leave some space in between the letters.
