I do not exactly have any interest in joining MI6 but i am interested to who actually carries out operations and whether you have to get promoted up to that level

My Niece wanted to enrol in MI6 or MI5 but when she found out she would be doing admin and secretarial work for 2 years at half the pay she's on now she said no.

You need a good degree. Apply to the foreign office. There are many jobs and several involving languages. Like all work you start lowly

I think you start off with MI1 and progress to MI6, takes about six years to reach MI6. That's when you get your exploding lighter!

I think you would have to apply that question to the Foreign office.
I always figured you had to be a graduate with honours and be able to tell jokes in urdo.

you need a background in the civil service then you have to rise up throught he ranks.

you have to be promoted, duh! Why would someone trust a newbie to become an agent - that wouldn't be very secure, would it?
